US law firms on track for record year of mergers

July 15, 2013 US law firms are merging at a cracking pace, with 39 mergers announced in the first half of the year.
The figures, published by Altman Weil MergerLine, put the industry on track for a record-breaking number of mergers in a year, if the second half of 2013 keeps pace with the first. The largest annual total for US law firm mergers was in 2008, with 70 mergers.

The largest deal announced in the second quarter of 2013 was the combination of Husch Blackwell, a 543-lawyer law firm headquartered in St. Louis, and Brown McCarroll, a 65-lawyer Texas firm.  Chicago-based global law firm Baker & McKenzie announced the only cross-border deal of the second quarter, acquiring 45-lawyer Habib Al Mulla in Dubai.
