ABA publishes guide to negotiating compensation

July 22, 2013 The American Bar Association has published a new guide entitled ‘What You Need to Know about Negotiating Compensation’. The guide is intended to help women in particular to navigate the system of formal and informal compensation criteria for law firm partners.

“This comprehensive guide for negotiation empowers female partners with an arsenal of information and insight into the compensation processes at law firms,” said ABA President Laurel Bellows. “Information is power. The ‘know your law firm’ information set out in this guide will catapult more women forward across the remaining barriers to gender equity.”

The guide advises lawyers on how to identify who makes compensation decisions, the criteria most often used and making sure decision-makers are aware of accomplishments.
