Law firms cut staff as industry changes

September 25, 2013 WSJ Blog has noted a number of law firms are making layoffs - there have been redundancies at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, 20 employees losing their jobs at Arent Fox another 17 at Duane Morris.

The post attributes the cuts to the advancing technology, the increasing tendency of lawyers to type their own emails and briefs, and legal process outsourcing. Client pressure to cut costs makes all of these factors more acute.

“Like many firms across the country, we are making hard choices to ensure that our resources are aligned with demand,” a spokesperson for Arent Fox said earlier this month. “This was a difficult decision that was made even harder because we are losing good people who have helped make Arent Fox an excellent law firm.”
