Merger negotiations between Orrick and Pillsbury fail

November 27, 2013 Merger negotiations between San Francisco law firms: Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe and Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman have ended due to client conflicts.

A statement from Pillsbury said: “Orrick and Pillsbury have ended talks about a potential combination of our firms. We mutually determined that we will not be able to proceed due to prospective client conflicts that we have not been able to resolve, notwithstanding each firm’s best efforts.”

The proposed merger would have created one of the 10 largest law firms in the US, and would have been the biggest law firm merger for the year in a year of record breaking merger activity. As of the end of September, 58 law firms had announced mergers, a 41 percent increase from the same period last year.
