No merger for US firms Patton Boggs and Locke Lord
Patton Boggs and Dallas-based firm Locke Lord have called off merger talks.
With Patton Boggs’ headcount of 500 lawyers and Locke Lord’s headcount of 650 lawyers, a combination of the two firms would have created the 36th largest law firm in the United States.
Unconfirmed reports say that the merger fell through partly because Patton Boggs wanted to keep control of the firm and its brand, and did not want to be subsumed by the larger firm.
On the other side, Locke Lord was reportedly concerned about an ongoing legal battle between Patton Boggs and Chevron in Ecuador. Patton Boggs partner James Tyrrell is representing a group of villagers in Ecuador in a multibillion dollar suit against Chevron, and Locke Lord is said to be worried about hurting its chances of getting business from Chevron in the future.
