Corporate partners launch new 'virtual' firm in Melbourne

March 5, 2014 Corporate partners have left behind the partnerships at Minter Ellison and DLA Piper to launch Hive Legal, a new firm in Melbourne, Australia, that aims to run a legal business in an unconventional way.

The firm wants to get rid of high overheads, billable hours and the culture of self-interest that is often found in large law firms. Co-founder Mitzi Gilligan said her decision to work on the new firm was prompted by a desire to establish a firm that “challenges the status quo”.

“With Hive, I was excited by the opportunity to start with a clean slate and design a law firm specifically for the contemporary legal market, which is undergoing fundamental changes," she said.

The new firm is led by managing director Jodie Baker, who had been working on the business model for two years before approaching Gilligan and Simon Davidson of DLA Piper. The firm will bring on additional principals, with announcements to come.

The firm has an office, but the model is a “virtual firm”, which will allow lawyers to work remotely. “They can work from home, they can work from client spaces, they can work from the beach house if they want; as long as they meet client requirements we won’t expect them to be in the office all the time,” said Gilligan.
