US law school to lay off professors

March 23, 2014 The dean of US school Appalachian School of Law is laying off law professors as part of a plan to reduce class sizes.

Dean Lucy McGough said that the school is seeing a decline in applications, and plans to cut many classes that fall outside its specialty areas of natural resources and alternative dispute resolution. The school is also looking to add a public health specialty, because the offering would be useful to lawyers in the region.

McGough indicated that the school would maintain a student/faculty ratio of no more than 15-to-1, but the incoming class size would be cut from about 70 to about 40 students next year.
