SEC picks WilmerHale partner for enforcement role

June 4, 2014 A partner from WilmerHale is set to take the No. 2 spot in the Securities and Exchange Commission’s enforcement division.

Stephanie Avakian is a partner in the New York office of WilmerHale and a vice chairwoman of the firm’s securities practice. In late June she will become the SEC’s deputy director of enforcement.

“Stephanie is widely respected because of her intelligence, her pragmatic approach and her excellent judgment,” said Andrew J. Ceresney, the S.E.C.’s enforcement director.

“I am honored and excited to return to the commission,” Ms. Avakian said in the statement. “I am looking forward to working with all of the dedicated staff in the division of enforcement to carry out the S.E.C.’s mission to protect investors.”
