US law school enrolments hit 40-year low

July 24, 2014 Applications US law schools are down 8 per cent, following even greater declines the two previous years, according to new data published by the Law School Admission Council. The total drop in applications since 2010 comes in at a whopping 37 per cent.

Commentators observe that the plummeting admissions will make this year’s incoming class the smallest group to enter accredited law schools since 1974.

Daniel Rodriguez, the Dean at Northwestern University law school, said he was not surprised by the figures, and was dismissive of the view that there might have been an uptick in enrolments this year: "Frankly, there was never a very good theory as to why we would see a correction this year, nor did the data point in that direction.”
