Morgan Lewis merges with Singapore's Stamford Law
Morgan Lewis & Bockius will merge with Singapore firm Stamford Law Corporation on 1 April this year. The merger will add 80 lawyers to Morgan Lewis' headcount. Through the structure of this merger, the new firm will be allowed to practice both Singaporean and foreign law.
There are three traditional licenses firms may obtain to enter the market in Singapore - a Qualifying Foreign Law Practice, a Joint Law Venture, or a Foreign Law Alliance. This merger instead admits the directors of the existing Stamford Law, which has no restrictions on the law it practices in Singapore, to become partners Morgan Lewis, otherwise maintaining the firms ability to practice freely in Singapore.
Stamford Law senior director Suet-Fern Lee will serve as Singapore managing partner. This merger will likely set a precedent for future mergers.
