Allen & Overy launches in South Korea
Allen & Overy is following in the footsteps of two other fellow magic circle firms and opening an office in South Korea. The firm will relocate partner Matthias Voss from Tokyo to launch the office in Seoul. The firm submitted its application with South Korea's Ministry of Justice several months ago and has now received a foreign legal consultant office license, allowing it to launch the office.
Voss, an energy and project finance partner, will be managing partner of the Seoul office. Jean Lee, an energy and projects partner based in Washington DC, and Kyu Bang, a counsel based in Sydney, will move to Seoul to form the team with Voss.
Apparently, the firm is also recruiting a few associates to slowly build the office up.
Before it was able to launch the office, the firm had been advising clients on Korea-related deals. A noteworthy client, ING group, sold its South Korean life insurance business with the firm's corporate partner Gary McLean, in Hong Kong, leading the team for the transaction.
