Simmons & Simmons closes office in Abu Dhabi

February 1, 2016 In what could be deemed a trend, Simmons & Simmons is closing its Abu Dhabi office after completing a review of its regional work. It's clients will continue to be served by the firm, but out of the firm's office in Dubai, the firm's largest office in the UAE.

The firm stated that this closure as well as its openings in Luxembourg, Munich and Singapore are indicative of those markets' significance for their clients. In addition to its Dubai office, Simmons & Simmons operates Middle East offices in Doha, Jeddah and Riyadh.

The Abu Dhabi office was staffed by five lawyers, of whom three were partners. It is yet unknown if the lawyers will remain with the firm or were offered to be relocated.

Simmons' exit is not without precedence. Other firms have recently closed Abu Dhabi offices, indicating a sustained trend for the exits. Last June, Herbert Smith Freehills closed its Abu Dhabi office and moved its five lawyers that remained to its office in Dubai. Both offices were opened in 2008. A month before HSF's closing, Baker Botts closed its Abud Dhabi office. In March before that, Latham & Watkins invited 35 of its lawyers who were in Abu Dhabi to move to its Dubai office, when it announced it would close its Abu Dhabi office and consolidate under its Dubai location.
