Wanted: Lawyers on payroll

February 12, 2016 According to a new report from Vacancysoft, a business intelligence company, the number of job openings for legal jobs has risen 40 percent in the past year. For the basis of the report, the firm analysed 9,900 job vacancies found at legal employers in 2014 and 2015.

London had 350 vacancies between the magic circle firms and US firms, an increase of 57 percent from the previous year. Clifford Chance was named as the firm that had the greatest increase in vacancies, pointing to banking and finance roles driving the demand.

Outside of London, the cities of Bristol, Birmingham and Manchester had the most potential for recruiting lawyers. Bristol had the highest total vacancies with 284, but Birmingham saw a 28 percent spike in 2015 compared to year prior. Pinsent Masons, Shoosmiths, Browne Jacobson and PwC Legal all ramped up recruitment there.

Interestingly, demand for lawyers on payroll at companies rose 74 percent. Out of 1500 jobs for in-house lawyers the analysis covered, 600 were situated in the financial services sector.
