Top US law firms avoid deferrals
Most of the top US law firms are currently not deferring associates despite the financial crisis. According to the AmLaw Daily, Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen and Katz; Sullivan & Cromwell; Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison; Kirkland & Ellis; Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart Oliver & Hedges; and Boies, Schiller & Flexner are starting all of their incoming associates as originally scheduled. Exceptions include Cravath, Swaine & Moore, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett who are paying up to $80,000 to new associates who accept deferrals.
