Law firms wait for competitors before setting new salary scale
Starting salaries for first-year law associates shot to an all-time high in the Pittsburgh market in 2007 as Pepper Hamilton LLC offered $145,000. Now most firms, including Pepper, are trying to decide whether they'll up the ante in 2008. "Salaries have gone up nationally," said Robert Denney, president of Robert Denney Associates Inc., a Wayne, Pa.-based consultancy that advises law firms across the country. "If you start at the New York firms and work back, they're up to $165,000. You'll have the ripple effect in the midsize firms."
