Opportunity or Expolitation?: Junior lawyers work for free
In the current economic environment, where many new law graduates are finding it very difficult to find employment, a number of firms have taken the step of asking junior lawyers to work for free. Some junior lawyers are working for weeks or months with little or no pay on the strength oblique promises that one day there may be offered some kind of paid position. Kevin Poulter of the Junior Lawyers Division has pointed out a growing trend for firms to offer these unpaid ‘opportunities’. He investigates the question of whether firms are providing a service to graduates who have no other opportunities, or whether they are in fact exploiting workers.
