How important is it to go to an elite law school?
It is more important to get good grades than to go to an elite law school, according to a paper published University of California, Los Angeles law professor Richard Sander and Brooklyn Law School visiting professor Jane Yakowitz. The two professors analyzed data from four studies to find that students tended to go to the most elite schools that would accept them. The paper questioned the wisdom of this strategy, since “students who ‘trade‐up’ in school prestige generally take a hit to their school performance”, and class rank is a key indicator of earning power.
