Bird & Bird cuts associate pay
Bird & Bird has cut associate pay by £2,000, bucking the trend for London firms, who generally seem to be raising salaries rather than cutting them. Under the new rules lawyers will continue to move up the salary bands each year, but each band will be cut by £2,000. The firm was keen to point out that "the majority of our lawyers will receive a 5% increase in salary this financial year". A spokeswoman for Bird & Bird said that "the decision to reduce the PQE bands was not taken lightly, however this decision was made given the continued economic uncertainty and the partnership's decision at the outset of the recession to retain talent and not have any mandatory redundancy rounds".
