No foreign lawyers in India, says Indian Law Ministry

The Indian Law Ministry has reported the Bar Council of India’s decision to bar foreign lawyers from the Indian legal services market. The decision is not final, and the issue is to be considered in greater depth after consulting with stakeholders. The Bar Council of India – the body empowered to regulate legal education and profession – has said that it is concerned with protecting the rights, privileges and interests of advocates for the benefit the Indian legal profession. The task of balancing the need for investment and the opportunity for skill acquisition against the concerns of working Indian lawyers is a delicate and sensitive one.
