Cravath scores with hire of top competition regulator

The US governement’s top competition regulator Christine Varney is stepping down from her role at the Justice Department to become a partner at the New York law firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Varney’s decision to step down now has surprised many, as the antitrust division had just begun to bring in big cases under her stewardship, after what many legal experts saw as a period of lax enforcement during the Bush administration. At Cravath, Varney will advise the clients on antitrust issues related to mergers, though government ethics rules prohibit her from appearing in any matter before the Justice Department for a period of two years.
