A&O GC sentenced to more than 15 years prison for fraud
The former general counsel for A&O Resource Management Ltd, Russell Mackert, has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for his role in scheme that defrauded investors of around $100 million. Mackert was found to have created an elaborate scheme that included sham companies and the hire of an actor to pretend to do due diligence on a sale. He also smuggled millions in cashier's checks past customs in Fort Lauderdale to deposit in a secret trust account in Nevis, and lied to regulators, outside counsel, and company auditors, as well as investors. U.S. attorney Neil MacBride said in a court memo that Mackert wasn't the mastermind of the company, but he did use his expertise to help the company evade regulators while it continued to bilk investors.
