Affirmative action considered for Britain's judiciary

A new affirmative action measure is being considered as a means to increase diversity in the British judiciary. The influential Joint Constitution Committee is advocating a “tie-breaker” law, which would allow those responsible for the appointment of judges to choose women or minority candidates where two candidates are otherwise equal. The group contends that the Supreme Court is “self-perpetuating”, because new appointments are currently made by senior judges.
