White & Case to launch Melbourne office

US firm White & Case has announced its plans to launch an Australian base in Melbourne, and is reportedly looking to poach partners from area firms. The new Melbourne office will focus on projects, infrastructure, and finance work. After launching in Melbourne, White & Case may also consider a Sydney office. The Australian legal market was left relatively unscathed by the country’s 2014 commodities crash, although there has been some slowdown in the recent run of mergers between UK and Australia firms. The latest major firm to launch in Australia was Hogan Lovells, which opened offices in Sydney and Perth in 2015.
