Squires and Hammonds agree to merge

US firm Squire, Sanders & Dempsey and British firm Hammonds have agreed to merge, creating a firm with some 1,275 lawyers across 37 offices in 17 countries. The combined firm will be called Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, with the Hammonds name and brand to be used only in legacy Hammonds locations. The chairman of Squire Sanders, James J Maiwurm, will take the role of global chief executive and chairman in the merged firm. Mr Maiwrum said: “Clients expect their law firms to embrace change and seize opportunity even in a challenging business climate. We hear our clients and know they consider cost-effective global counsel the norm, not the exception.”
