Bombay High Court elevates 15 lawyers to senior counsel, none of them women
The Bombay High Court has elevated 15 lawyers to the status of senior counsel. None of the 15 are women, and the process has come under fire on this and other bases. One advocate said: “A lot of people feel that the procedure should be merit-based and transparent,” adding that Mumbai lagged far behind Delhi in elevation numbers. In last 20 years 96 lawyers were promoted to senior counsel in Bombay, and only three (a little over three per cent) were female. The figures are even worse in in Delhi, where three women accounted for just 2.4 per cent of the promotions, or three out of 122 senior counsel. The list of new 2011 Bombay senior counsel is as follows: • V Sridharan • Shrikrishna Narhar Inamdar • Soli Khurshed Cooper • Subodh Shrikanta Kantak • Sunil Vyankatesh Manohar “Arunodaya” • Shyam Anil Mehta • Shailesh Sanat Shah • Venkatesh Raghunath Dhond • Ketan Dhirendra Parikh • Shiraz Peshotan Rustomjee • Kevic Anant Setalvad • Keshav Malu Naik • Joaquim F Reis • Rajiv Mahendranath Kumar • Anand Kishen Grover
