More lawyers registered in the UK than ever before

December 19, 2011 There are 163,109 lawyers registered on the roll in the UK, up from 68,971 in 1991, to a record high.

The number of practicing lawyers might be better estimated by looking at the figures for current practicing certificates, and the gap between the number of solicitors on the roll and those with current practicing certificates shows an increasing number of qualified solicitors out of work. No surprises there.

But there are also other factors contributing to the high figures for registered lawyers – the practising certificate renewal process appears to be causing delays and technical problems, and the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority is still counting as valid practising certificates that would otherwise have lapsed.
