Shearman & Sterling senior partner shifts to GC role at Citigroup

The senior partner at Shearman & Sterling, Rohan Weerasinghe, has announced that he is leaving the firm to take up a role as the general counsel at Citigroup. Incumbent Citigroup GC Michael Helfer will become vice chairman of the group. Weerasinghe will leave the Shearman & Sterling in June, and the firm is making moves to find and appoint a replacement before the global partners’ meeting in the US in early May. Weerasinghe said: “Having spent 35 years advising companies on their most critical legal issues, I am looking forward to this new professional challenge - leading Citi’s world-class legal organisation as it continues to provide important guidance to the company.” Shearman London head Nick Buckworth noted that Citigroup is one of the firm’s biggest clients, adding that: “This is a great way for us to continue to maintain that relationship. They’re a very, very important client for us.” He went on: “Rohan has done a sterling job in terms of really injecting a lot of energy and pace into the business.”
