Hogan Lovells considers Shanghai association

Hogan Lovells is in the midst of considering a permitted association in the Shanghai FTZ trade area. Launched in 2013, the Shanghai FTZ is the first trade area of its kind in mainland China, and has been likened to a similar trade area in Hong Kong. It is expected to affect key sectors such as telecoms, finance, and the legal market. Baker & McKenzie is currently the first and only firm with an association in the Shanghai FTZ, and has engaged in an association with FenXun Partners since April 2015. Hogan Lovells would be the second firm to secure such a licence, which stipulates that firms must remain structurally separate from one another. Several other firms, including Linklaters, Herbert Smith Freehills, Simmons & Simmons and Dechert, are also considering entering into associations in the Shanghai FTZ.
