Herbert Smith Freehills to launch in Malaysia

Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) is preparing to launch in Kuala Lumpur in May, having recently received a qualified foreign law firm (QFLF) license from the Bar Council in Malaysia. Once the office opens, HSF will be the second international law firm to operate an office in the country. Trowers & Hamlins was the first international firm to launch in Malaysia, having secured a QFLF license in 2015. The new HSF location will focus on disputes, transactions, and Islamic finance, but the firm has not yet announced details regarding staffing. According to Sonya Leydecker, joint CEO of Herbert Smith Freehills, the Kuala Lumpur location will help the firm service Malaysian clients, as the firm has worked with clients in the region for more than 20 years.
