Cleary, Jones Day and Stikeman Elliott land roles in BHP Billiton deal

Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Jones Day and Stikeman Elliott have taken leading roles in BHP Billiton's $38.6 billion unsolicited offer for Canada's Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan Inc. New York firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton is providing legal advice to BHP Billiton, while Potash is advised by US law firm Jones Day and Canadian firm Stikeman Elliott. If the deal goes through it will be one of the biggest this year. The advisory fees are expected to be upward of $190 million, to be shared between the banks, law firms and public-relations firms working on the deal.
