Australian firm Freehills reportedly in merger talks with UK firm Herbert Smith

RollonFriday reports on rumours that Australian firm Freehills and UK firm Herbert Smith are preparing to put the question of a merger to their respective partnerships - an event that could take place as early as next month. Herbert Smith has made no comment about the progres of the negotiations, while Freehills stated that there is "considerable interaction" between the firms, however, as yet "there is no confirmation of a timeframe for a partner vote".   It is as yet unclear what form a merger would take - whether it would be a full integration with profit sharing or a less complete alliance. Freehills has a lawyer headcount of 980 lawyers, and posted revenues of $511m (£318m) in the 2010/11 financial year. Herbert Smith is an even larger enterprise, with 1,347 lawyers and a turnover of £488m ($782m).
